Residency/Armed Forces Residency

As a military-affiliated student, you may qualify for in-state tuition rates under the Armed Forces Residency Benefit. More information is on the Armed Forces Residency page.

Once you are approved for in-state residency, out-of-state merit scholarships automatically convert to the in-state equivalent scholarship. Visiting this scholarship page will show equivalent in-state merit scholarship amounts.

VA Benefits

To use your VA education benefits/GI Bill®, you will go online to fill out a KU web form each semester in which you wish to use your benefits. Visit the Using VA Benefits page for more information on your next steps.

The VA determines who is eligible for the Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship and who will receive benefits. Find more information at  Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship

Yes, KU offers the Yellow Ribbon Program, but the VA's Yellow Ribbon program is only for Ch. 33 Post-9/11 GI Bill users at the 100% benefit level paying out-of-state tuition who do not meet the Armed Forces Residency Benefit (AFRB) criteria. Visit the AFRB page first to see if you qualify for AFRB.

Note for KUMC students only: KUMC does not currently offer Yellow Ribbon but does offer AFRB. Visit the Military Residency page to learn more.

Military Education Benefits

To use military tuition assistance, start with your Education Services Officer (ESO) or counselor within your specific branch prior to enrolling. Information on using tuition assistance (TA) at KU can found on our  military tuition assistance  webpage.

Eligibility and administration for the Army's College Loan Repayment Program (LRP) varies by component. You can find more information by going to the  MyArmyBenefits webpage.

KU awards some college credit for military courses.

To obtain college credit for your military service/education/training, please see the appropriate “Applying to KU section” on your branch’s webpage linked below.

Veterans: Check out the “applying to KU” section on the  Veterans page
Guard/Reserve members: Check out the “applying to KU” section on the  Guard/Reserves page
Active Duty: Check out the “applying to KU” section on the  Active Duty page

If you are active duty and coming to KU under an Advanced Education Program, you can get the necessary enrollment information for your branch by visiting our  Active Duty page  and looking under the “Academic Programs for Military Personnel” section for details.

Scholarships, Financial Aid

You can apply for most KU military-affiliated scholarships when they open each spring for the next academic year. Check the  military-affiliated scholarships page to learn more.

We keep track of local and national military-affiliated scholarships on our Scholarships page. Deadlines and criteria vary.

To be considered as an independent student based on veteran status, the Department of Education uses a specific definition. There is no minimum number of days a student must have served on active duty to be considered a veteran (Pursuant to an enlistment in the National Guard or Reserves, periods of active duty for training do not qualify a student as a veteran). Learn more on the  Federal Student Aid website.

Applicants who meet the criteria of the definition should check "yes" to the vet question on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

To make sure that you get all of the financial aid that you are entitled to, including scholarships and military/VA education benefits, you may find it helpful to visit our aid page to learn more about the factors that affect what you receive and when you receive it. .

The Kansas Office of Veterans Services located in Lawrence can help with filing for medical, disability or other benefits.

To obtain a certificate of enrollment, visit our  School Enrollment Verification Letters  page for instruction.

The Military-Affiliated Student Center has multiple computers with Common Access Card (CAC) readers. Visit our Current  MASC Hours & Amenities page  for more info.

Watson and Anschutz libraries  also have CAC readers.

Activation/Mobilization

If you need to miss a few classes because of your military duties, KU policy provides guidance on how those absences should be handled. University policy  lists required military service as excused absences. That means a student cannot be penalized and shall receive an accommodation for completing the missed work. University excused absences apply to all course requirements, including any final examinations, quizzes, in class work, and tests other than final examinations. In cases where part of a class grade is based on attendance, a student shall not be penalized for missing class due to a university excused absence. Please visit our  Activation/Mobilization  page for detailed information.

If you have received military orders that require you to leave KU, please visit our  Activation/Mobilization  page for detailed information.

You need to inform KU if you are being deployed or activated, even if it happens in between semesters. This can help ensure a smoother return to KU if you take a semester off. Visit our  Activation/Mobilization  page for the process.

To reinstate your college career after returning from a military deployment/activation, contact us  when you are ready to return to KU. We will assist you with the readmission process in any way we can.

Visit with your advisor or program coordinator to discuss plans for your return, i.e. retaking courses or what courses you will need to enroll in upon your return.
