You may qualify for in-state tuition rates under the Armed Forces Residency Benefit. More information is on the Armed Forces Residency page.
Once approved for in-state residency, out-of-state merit scholarships automatically convert to the in-state equivalent scholarship. Visiting this scholarship page will show equivalent in-state merit scholarship amounts.
VA Benefits
Everything is done online. You will fill out a KU web form each semester you wish to use your benefits. Visit the Using VA Benefits page for your steps.
Visit the Using VA Benefits page – specifically step 1 under steps for “new/transfer students, first-time users and those switching chapters.”
The VA will mail you a letter each semester regarding how many days/months of benefits you used and the amount remaining. For other ways to find out, visit the Military-Affiliated Student Center’s FAQs page.
Possibly. Visit the Military-Affiliated Student Center’s FAQs page for more information.
- Only classes that meet a graduation requirement can be reported to the VA. Speak with your academic advisor to make sure your course fits a graduation requirement (e.g. in your major/minor, Core 34, junior/senior hours, etc.). Visit the Using VA benefits page – Enrollment Status and Training Time section for additional information.
- VA will not cover repeat courses and they will not count repeats toward your full-time status unless you received an “F” OR if you failed to meet the minimum required course grade to move forward in your program.
Part of it depends on when you submit your KU request for benefits. Visit the Military-Affiliated Student Center’s FAQs page for more information, or contact the MASC.
When you complete your Using VA Benefits web form each semester, we push your deadline back for tuition, fees and any housing/dining/bookstore charges to Dec. 15 (fall), May 15 (spring), Aug. 15 (summer). KU does not drop students from classes for non-payment. Visit the Military-Affiliated Student Center’s FAQs page for more information.
Ch. 33 Post-9/11 GI Bill & Ch. 31 VR&E users: Did you complete your KU request for VA benefits? If so, we first tell the VA just your credit hours to get your book stipend and/or housing allowance going. We will report the tuition a bit later, as required by law. This means it may take longer for the VA to pay your tuition/fees.
Other VA benefits users: VA pays nothing to KU. You are responsible for paying your entire bill.
Students must be enrolled full time in term-long classes to receive full VA education benefits. This means short-term and non-standard courses can reduce your full-time status and your benefits.
Before you enroll in short classes, see the "Enrollment Status and Training Time" section on our Using VA Benefits page for more details. Contact the Military-Affiliated Student Center with questions.
Possibly. Visit the Military-Affiliated Student Center’s FAQs page for more information, or contact the MASC.
The VA requires certain users to verify their enrollments at the end of each month for the time they were in classes. Visit the Military-Affiliated Student Center’s VA benefits page – Monthly Enrollment Verification section – for more information.
Visit the GI Bill Comparison Tool for estimates.
It depends on whether you are getting restricted aid or unrestricted aid. Visit our aid page for more information.
Post-9/11 GI Bill users: to receive that money while waiting on the VA to pay your tuition and fees, complete the VA Educational Benefits - Early Release of Funds* form each semester. *A link to this form is included in the KU request for VA benefits form you complete each semester.
It depends. Visit the Military-Affiliated Student Center’s FAQs page for more information.
If you are switching your VA benefits program while at KU, you will need to complete a "New KU Request for Benefits" instead of a "Continued Request" and upload your new Certificate of Eligibility.
The VA determines who is eligible and who will receive benefits. More information at: Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship.
Yes, but the VA's Yellow Ribbon program is only for Ch. 33 Post-9/11 GI Bill users at the 100% benefit level paying out-of-state tuition who do not meet the Armed Forces Residency Benefit (AFRB) criteria. Visit the AFRB page first to see if you qualify for AFRB.
Note for KUMC students only: KUMC does not currently offer Yellow Ribbon but does offer AFRB. Visit the Military Residency page to learn more.

Scholarships, Financial Aid
Most KU military-affiliated scholarships open each spring for the next academic year. Check the military-affiliated scholarships page to learn more.
We keep track of local and national military-affiliated scholarships on our Scholarships page. Deadlines and criteria vary.
To be considered as an independent student based on veteran status, the Department of Education uses a specific definition. There is no minimum number of days a student must have served on active duty to be considered a veteran (periods of active duty for training, pursuant to an enlistment in the National Guard or Reserves, do not qualify a student as a veteran). Learn more on the Federal Student Aid website.
Applicants who meet the criteria of the definition should check "yes" to the vet question on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
What you receive in terms of financial aid/military/VA education benefits and when you receive everything you are entitled to will depend on a variety of factors. Visit our aid page to learn more.
