Academic Advising Resources

Academic Advising FAQ

Academic advising is a service available to all KU students. Academic advisors support major exploration and selection, degree planning, investigating experiential learning opportunities in your program, and connecting with campus resources. Advisors are positioned to provide holistic support tailored to you and are at the center of your KU network of support.

You can find out who your advisor is by reviewing your success team in Jayhawk GPS/Navigate 360. If you need to meet with your advisor, please try downloading the Navigate Student App or log in using the website to schedule an appointment with your assigned advisor. Students can also call 785-864-2834, and a staff member will help you schedule an appointment.

Undergraduate or graduate students can make an appointment with their advisor through the Navigate Student App  or the  JayhawkGPS website.

We also offer drop-in undergraduate advising on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 12:30-4:00, no appointment necessary!

To remove a hold, you first need to determine the reason for the hold. Enrollment holds are restrictions—a hold may mean that documentation is missing, you need to meet with an advisor, or some other action is required. Your holds will always be listed within Enroll & Pay and the Navigate Student App with instructions on how to resolve these holds. Your advisor is also available to assist you.

It is always best to consult with an academic advisor when you are considering dropping a class as there are many factors to consider. Courses can be dropped through Enroll & Pay under the “Manage Classes” tile. Undergraduate and graduate students can make an appointment with their advisors through the Navigate Student App or the JayhawkGPS website.  On Monday and Thursday afternoons from 12:30-4:00, undergraduate students can come to drop-in advising.

The process of withdrawing from all your classes is different than the process for dropping a class and varies depending on the time of the semester in which the withdrawal is taking place. Consult the "Dropping and Withdrawing" section on the Registrar’s website for information particular to your situation, and connect with your academic advisor.

Graduate students can start a request for a Leave of Absence with their advisor. Each academic unit may require different documentation to submit this request. You can make an appointment or communicate with your advisor directly through the Navigate Student App or the JayhawkGPS website.

Degree audits are checklists for undergraduate degree requirements in your major, minor, and certificate programs. They are helpful tools when creating a graduation plan and should be consulted when selecting courses each semester. If you are an undergraduate student who started at KU prior to Spring 2025, you can access your degree audits (named DPRs) in  MyKU. Ask your academic advisor if you have any questions about your DPR.

If you are a graduate student, you should reach out to your advisor with any degree audit related questions. You can make an appointment with your advisor through the  Navigate Student App  or the  JayhawkGPS website.

Midway through each semester, you will meet with your advisor to discuss selecting your courses for the next semester. You and your advisor will consult your degree audit and graduation plan. Share with your advisor any changes to your plan. If goals have shifted or the plan needs to be adjusted, your advisor is there to help.

All undergraduate students will create a multi-semester graduation plan with their academic advisor. Students starting at KU in Fall 2024 or after will build this graduation plan in  Planner. These plans allow you to drag-and-drop requirements from your degree audit into specific semesters. The location of graduation plans for students who started in Spring 2024 or prior are school-specific. Review your graduation plan semesterly with your academic advisor.

Graduate students create a plan of study with their advisor to map out the courses needed to complete their degree. Please review your plan or study with your advisor semesterly.

Once you are close to completing all of your degree requirements, you need to inform the University of Kansas of your intent to graduate by applying for graduation. The deadlines for applying to graduate vary by the semester in which you intend to graduate. Those deadlines and the application to graduate can be found on the Registrar’s  Apply for Graduation webpage.

Transcripts record coursework you have taken at a college or university. KU’s transcript records all courses in which you received a grade (including Ws and courses taken as Credit/No Credit) or courses which are currently in progress. Transcripts also list all credit-bearing transfer coursework that KU has received and evaluated. Official transcripts can be requested on the  Registrar’s website. If you only need a semester-by-semester print-out of courses completed (sometimes called an “unofficial transcript”), you can log into  MyKU, click on Academics->My Academic Progress, and then the “Advising Report” button in the bottom right corner.

For undergraduate students who would like to change their major there are two things to consider. If your major is in the same school, you are currently in please contact your academic advisor to walk you through the process. If you are wanting to change majors outside of your current school, please complete the correct form found on this webpage.

Graduate students will need to complete a new application for the new program, there is no form to complete to switch degrees. Please contact your academic advisor for more information about the application process and next steps.
