Seminar FAQs
First-Year Seminar courses are small (24 or fewer students), interactive courses on engaging topics taught by some of the best instructors at KU. Whether you’re interested in Taylor Swift or classical music, math or modern art, there’s a First-Year Seminar course for you. In addition to learning more about an exciting new subject, you’ll get connected to campus resources and the KU community.
Any freshman can take a First-Year Seminar. You can choose a seminar topic that matches your major, or just a topic that sounds interesting to you! First-Year Seminar courses are a great place to explore your interests and discover something new – no previous experience necessary.
First-Year Seminars are an excellent opportunity to take a course in something you’re really excited about. First-Year Seminar instructors are enthusiastic about their courses and well-prepared to help guide you through your transition to KU. You’ll also get connected to the campus community of students, faculty, and staff and strengthen your academic skills – both things that will benefit you in all your courses!
All First-Year Seminar courses satisfy a KU Core 34 Goal (either US Culture or Global Culture).
Every First-Year Seminar is different, but you can expect to get out of the classroom for behind-the-scenes tours and field trips. You’ll participate in hands-on learning alongside your classmates and develop skills with meaningful assignments that will help you throughout your time at KU and beyond.
Past First-Year Seminars have attended theatre performances, toured behind-the-scenes at the KU Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, explored the University archives, and more.
Your academic advisor is a fantastic resource when it comes to selecting first-year or transfer seminars or any class! All first-year seminars are listed by their subject (eg. COMS, FREN, BIOL) and number 176 or 177.
Courses using the 176/276 number satisfy the US Culture goal of KU Core 34. Courses using the 177/277 satisfy the Global Culture goal of KU Core 34.
