Hixson Opportunity Award

The Hixson award helps Kansas students with major personal and financial hardships come to KU. If selected as a Hixson Scholar, you’ll receive an award of $6,000 per year that can be renewed for four years. You will also have the opportunity to engage in advising, tutoring, workshops, peer mentoring and community service. Applicants must have faced significant personal challenges and financial hardship, and show financial need.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Have faced significant personal challenges as well as financial hardship
  • Kansas resident
  • Current high school senior enrolling at KU in the upcoming fall semester
  • Admitted to the University of Kansas
  • Show financial need determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Priority consideration given to first-generation students

Why this program?

  • $6,000 per year, renewable for a total of four years
  • One-on-one academic, career, financial and personal advising
  • Monthly peer discussion groups with other scholars
  • Two-credit orientation course, University 101 in fall of freshman year with other Hixson Scholars (tuition for the course is waived)
  • Annual reception with the donor, Miss Christina Hixson
  • Opportunity to become part of a deep and engaged network of current scholars and alumni who provide insight, friendship and opportunities to one another
